The summer camp registration lottery is new to GSCTX but has been used successfully by many other Girl Scout councils and other summer camps in Central Texas. It is a way to make camp registration easier and more equitable for all campers. It also removes the pressure of time-specific registration from caregivers.
When you enter the summer camp registration lottery for your camper between January 11 and January 21, 2024, you will complete a form, providing us with the information we need to register your camper for overnight summer camp. This will include some demographic information as well as up to five preferred sessions, in rank order. You will also be able to request a buddy for your camper and will have the opportunity to specify your priorities regarding siblings attending camp together. Please note that campers will only be able to request one buddy and the request must be mutual – both campers must enter the lottery, select the same session(s), and request each other. You will also be able to indicate if the buddy is a preference or a requirement for registration.
Once the lottery window has closed, we will use a random number generator to assign each lottery entry a number. This number will determine the order in which the camper is placed into a session.
As each camper’s number comes up, they will be assigned into their highest ranked camp session that has a space available. If none of their camp sessions are available, they will be placed on the waitlist for their highest ranked camp session that has a waitlist space available. If a camper’s number comes up and they have a buddy or sibling, we will utilize the indicated requests when placing them so that we meet everyone’s needs. These campers will be placed in their highest ranked camp session that allows for their buddy and/or sibling request to also be satisfied.
All caregivers will be notified by January 30, 2024, of which camp their camper was registered in or waitlisted in. There will be a short window to request changes if this session no longer works for your family. Instructions for requesting changes will be included in the email.
We will then do all the work to register your camper for their camp session. Beginning early February, you will be able to see their registration in your MyGS account, access important paperwork, and make additional payments towards the full camp price.
Some lottery notes, tips, and tricks:
- The more sessions you indicate, the greater the likelihood of getting one of your choices. Campers will be able to include up to five session choices.
- To increase your chance of getting into one of your preferred sessions, select at least one that is not a specialty camp session. (Specialty camp sessions will be listed as such in the Summer Camp Guide.)
- If requesting a buddy, please make sure that both buddies request each other and request the same sessions in the same order. This will increase the chance of getting into a preferred session.
- Each year, we have a few camp sessions that are more popular than others. While we try our best to predict this and offer multiple opportunities to attend those camp sessions, sometimes we miss one. For the lottery process, a popular camp is defined as a camp session that, if every camper who entered the lottery got their first choice, would be at 200 or more percent capacity. For these popular camps, buddies will only be placed in the camp session if both buddies would get in independently based on their lottery numbers. Campers will not be able to skip the line to attend a popular camp with their buddy.
