Learn how to effectively prevent and respond to water emergencies with American Red Cross lifeguard training, the most respected source for this training and certification. With our lifeguard training courses, you will learn how effective preparation and quick response times are vital to being a lifeguard while also understanding the crucial elements in helping to prevent drownings and injuries.
This detailed training includes both testing of hands-on skills as well as a written test. Upon successful completion of the Lifeguarding course, you will receive a Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification, which is valid for two years and is accepted nationwide.
This is a blended learning class requiring seven hours of online curriculum to be completed before the 20 hours of in-person training. The link to the online curriculum will be sent to each participant after registration closes. Online curriculum must be successfully completed before arrival at camp. Allow at least seven hours to complete the online module. You must bring the certificate of completion of the online portion with you to the first day of class (on paper or on your phone).
Swimming prerequisites: Participants must successfully complete the two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations:

  • LIFEGUARD ONLY) Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest: Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface, then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed. Next, maintain position at the surface of the water for two minutes by treading water using only the legs. Finally, swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
  • (LIFEGUARD + WATERFRONT) Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest: Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface, then swim 350 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed. Next, maintain position at the surface of the water for two minutes by treading water using only the legs. Finally, swim 200 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
  • (LIFEGUARD + WATERFRONT) Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water; swim goggles are NOT allowed). Surface dive (feet first or headfirst) to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
  • (LIFEGUARD + WATERFRONT) Swim five yards, submerge, swim ten yards underwater collecting three objects. Return to the surface and swim an additional five yards. Goggles are not allowed.

Please read the course options carefully. A lifeguard hip pack, an adult mask, an infant mask, and a whistle with a breakaway lanyard are required for this course. You may purchase this kit (a $38 value) for $25 as part of your registration, provide your own, or borrow a set for the weekend. This hip pack is a required piece of equipment for all lifeguards and is necessary for working any aquatic event.
If an attendee is unable to complete the online course after it is issued (for any reason, including not completing the prerequisites or online training), there is a $50 non-refundable American Red Cross course fee (included in the course fee). This is in addition to the Girl Scouts of Central Texas cancellation fee.
Lifeguard certification allows adults to take Girl Scouts to swimming pools. The waterfront module, which will be offered as a separate course on Monday, October 13, is required for lakes, rivers, streams, paddle sports, snorkeling, kayaking, and other water activities. Always consult Safety Activity Checkpoints for additional information.
