This class will introduce you to the fundamentals of kayaking in a comfortable setting and at a relaxed pace. You will learn about proper strokes and paddling technique and get the chance to practice these new skills on a beautiful, local waterway. REI's expert guides will also teach the basics of water safety, trip planning, and how to have an enjoyable time on the water. This is a great way to build a new skill set or improve upon what you already know about kayaking.
As with all water activities, Girl Scouts should be strong swimmers to participate.
Please arrive 15-20 minutes for check in. Bring a filled up reusable water bottle. Pack energy snacks for the morning.REI provides sit-on-top kayaks, paddles, life jackets, and all necessary safety equipment with 2 dry bags for the group to share. Most kayaks used in this experience can accommodate up to 350 pounds. Two additional kayaks have a 500-pound limit. Life jackets, or PFDs (personal flotation devices), can fit a chest range of 30-56 inches. REI rates this class as "easy active" - great for newcomers to outdoor adventures who are ready to move.

Location: Jessica Hollis Park, Austin
