In 2021, we began a review of the naming of Camp Kachina, our Girl Scout camp property located on the shores of Lake Belton, in response to concerns regarding its name being culturally appropriative and contextually irrelevant. Extensive research and community input led to our decision to change the camp’s name. Over the summer of 2023, we invited youth and adult members, along with members of the wider community, to suggest new names for the property. And a distinct trend emerged. Thirty-three percent of name nominations included “Bluebonnet,” which is both the Texas state flower and commemorates the original Bluebonnet Girl Scout Council that founded the camp. Following a final round of voting from our membership, we are excited to announce the official name of our camp: Bluebonnet Shores Girl Scout Camp.
Over the coming months, we will be updating Bluebonnet Shores property to reflect its new name, and we look forward to hosting a ribbon cutting and open house event in the spring of 2024.
