With extensive input from the local Girl Scout community, our Board of Directors, our Girl Advisory Board, and the indigenous people of the Hopi and Comanches tribes, Girl Scouts of Central Texas (GSCTX) is taking action to remove culturally appropriated elements from Camp Kachina. There are several issues of cultural appropriation of the Hopi and Southwestern Tribes present at camp, including both the camp’s name and some camp features, the presence of which directly conflict with the mission and values of Girl Scouts of Central Texas.
From June 1 – August 6, 2023, we invited our community to suggest new names for the camp, and the results were clear. Thirty-three percent of name nominations included “Bluebonnet,” which is both the Texas state flower and commemorates the original Bluebonnet Girl Scout Council that founded the camp. After removing nominated names that are already in use by camps in the vicinity, we invite you to vote for your favorite among the remaining two top-submitted options.
Please cast your vote for the final camp name below. Voting will close at midnight on Monday, September 4, 2023.
