Stay sharp and hone your knife safety knowledge, Girl Scouts! Whether
you're preparing food or going camping, knife safety skills are an
essential outdoor skill. Let's start with the basics!
Gain
confidence while learning safety rules and practicing skills in a
developmentally appropriate manner (starting with a paper knife and
moving up to a pocket knife) while demonstrating pocket knife
progression skills. Let's practice with soap carvings and snack
preparation.
Parents and caregivers, please use your discretion
regarding maturity and individual readiness for this skill and
responsibility. GSCTX will provide knives with a lock-back design. If
at any point a girl is being unsafe with her pocket knife, an adult
will remove it.
Girls will learn the following skills:
Opening and closing a knife
Passing a knife
Sharpening a
knife
Making a soap carving
Demonstrating proper knife
usage
Cleaning a knife
During registration, you will have the option to purchase a pocket knife if desired. The knife will remain in the package for the duration of the event and be sent home with the adult after the event.
