Learn how to effectively prevent and respond to water emergencies with American Red Cross lifeguard training. You will learn how effective preparation and quick response times are vital to being a lifeguard while also understanding the crucial elements in helping to prevent drownings and injuries.
This detailed training includes both testing of hands-on skills as well as a written test. Upon successful completion of the Lifeguarding course, you will receive a Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification, which is valid for two years and is accepted nationwide.
This is a blended learning class requiring seven hours of online curriculum to be completed before the 20 hours of in-person training. The link to online curriculum will be sent to each participant after registration closes on April 18, 2024. Online curriculum must be successfully completed before arrival at camp. Allow at least seven hours to complete the online module. You must bring the certificate of completion of the online portion with you to the first day of class (paper copy or on your phone).
Students must pass a pre-course swimming skills test prior to taking lifeguarding courses. This includes:

  • an untimed 300-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke,
  • a 2-minute tread using legs only, and
  • starting in the water, swim 20 yards using crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-lb dive weight, return to the surface, and then swim (using legs only) 20 yards back to the starting point with the weight, and exit the pool without using a ladder, all within 100 seconds

The registration fee includes all instruction, certification fees, class materials, lodging, and meals: breakfast (Sat/Sun), lunch (Sat/Sun), dinner (Sat only).
Event times:

  • Friday: Check in at camp at 5:30 p.m. At 6:00 p.m., be at the pool and ready to complete pre-course swimming skills test. Instruction will continue until 10:00 p.m. Bring your own dinner Friday night.
  • Saturday: Class will be all day with breaks
  • Sunday: Class continues until 6:00 p.m. Check-out process does include basic cleaning of lodging. This is Girl Scout camp!

Participants must attend and complete all three training days.
The American Red Cross lifeguard manual is available online for an additional fee.
If an attendee is unable to complete the course after March 22, 2024, for any reason, including not completing the prerequisites or online training, there is a $50 non-refundable American Red Cross course fee (included in the course fee). This is in addition to the Girl Scouts of Central Texas cancellation fee.
Lifeguard certification allows adults to take Girl Scouts to swimming pools. The waterfront module, which will be offered as a separate course in Spring 2024, is required for lakes, rivers, streams, paddle sports, snorkeling, and other water activities. Always consult Safety Activity Checkpoints for additional information.
