GSCTX Level 1 Canoe Training (Adults) 12/4/22

This training is necessary in order to take Girl Scouts canoeing on Flat Water. We will be out on the water for most of this course. Trainees will be expected to research and teach a skill assigned to them to the group and perform paddling skills.

We expect that participants will have the paddling skills, technical knowledge, rescue ability, teaching ability, group management, and interpersonal skills that are expected of leadership within GSCTX.

Bring a change of clothes and lunch as well as sunscreen. Dress appropriately for the weather and make sure to bring closed-toed shoes as well as water shoes to camp. sure to bring closed-toed shoes as well as water shoes to camp. A potential reschedule date in case of bad weather will be for December 11th, same time and location.

Location: Camp Kachina, Belton

Special Instructions: All participants must be able to meet each of these prequisite criteria.

1. Breathe independently (without assistance of medical devices to sustain breathing)2. Hold breath underwater independently 3. Independently hold head upright without additional support 4. Manage personal care independently or with appropriate assistance of a companion 5. Manage personal mobility independently or with reasonable assistance 6. Follow instructions and effectively communicate independently or with appropriate assistance 7. Independently maneuver in the water while wearing a properly fitted life jacket (turn from face-down to face-up) 8. Get on/off or in/out of a canoe independently or with reasonable assistance 9. Independently get out from under a capsized canoe 10. Remount or reenter the canoe following a controlled capsize independently or with reasonable assistance 11. Maintain a safe body position while attempting activities, rescues, and skills listed in the course outline. 12. Recognize and identify appropriate times to perform rescues, skills, and activities as necessary as well as when they would be considered unsafe.
