Girls go tech

STEM programs motivate girls to take an early interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. We love engaging girls in STEM through programs that help them earn Journey awards and badges. Our robotics teams, space camps, and career exploration days inspire girls to tackle tomorrow’s technological opportunities and challenges. Below are just a few of the many ways you can enjoy STEM through Girl Scouts of Central Texas.

Troop leaders and parents: do you know a girl who's interested in STEM? Chances are she is, no matter where her interests lie – because STEM is a part of everything from music to sports to fashion design to animal care. Check out this great guide that can help you encourage your girls' budding love of STEM!

Hey, Daisies: check out our  Daisy STEM Badge , exclusive to our council! It's a really fun way to start exploring all the exciting STEM possibilities in your local environment. (And it looks amazing underneath your petals on your vest or tunic.)

EDGE Labs

EDGE LABS

The Austin, Brownwood, and Waco Service Centers offer technology labs with access to desktop and laptop computers, high-speed internet, and the full suite of Microsoft software.

Want to design your own blog? Fantastic – use one of our laptops! Love to take pictures? Great – we have digital cameras. Want to be a producer when you grow up? We support you! We’ve got video cameras. We also have digital cameras, microscopes and color printers for girls to use.

Want to know the latest excitement? The Waco EDGE lab has a new 3D printer!

Girls can participate in digital literacy workshops in the EDGE labs. Some of our equipment can even be checked out from the labs for troop use.

ROBOTICS TEAMS

Did you know that GSCTX has seven all-girl robotics teams? We’d love for you to join and discover how to build and program robots. Working with mentors in the field, girls experiment with new techniques and learn from the outcomes. Once the robot is created, it needs to be programmed and decorated. You’re not only building a robot here, girls, you’re defying stereotypes, creating future technology, meeting new people, making friends, practicing your public speaking skills and enjoying team success. Here’s the scoop:

  • Junior FIRST LEGO League (Jr.FLL®) For Girl Scouts ages 6-9 (Daisies & Brownies)
Junior FIRST LEGO® League (Jr.FLL®) captures young children's curiosity and directs it toward discovering the wonders of science and technology. This program features a real-world scientific concept to be explored through research, teamwork, construction, and imagination. We currently have a team in Austin.
  • FIRST LEGO League (FLL®) For Girl Scouts ages 9-14 (Juniors & Cadettes)
Girl Scouts of Central Texas have an exciting opportunity to compete in a FIRST LEGO® League (FLL®) competitions! Discover and solve real-world engineering challenges, connect with engineering and science professionals, and take action to make positive contributions to society. We currently have teams in Belton and Austin.  No previous robotic experience necessary.
  • FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) For Girl Scouts ages 14-19 (Seniors & Ambassadors)
FRC combines the excitement of sports with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules,  limited resources, and time limits, teams of six students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors.  It’s as close to “real-world engineering” as a student can get. Girls get to learn from professional engineers, build and compete with a robot of their own design, learn and use sophisticated software and hardware, compete and cooperate in alliances and tournaments, and qualify for nearly $14.8 million in college scholarships. GSCTX sponsors an FRC Team in Austin and Waco.

CODER GIRLS

Our Coder Girls programs offer girls of all ages the opportunity to explore the wonderful world of computer science. These age-appropriate courses develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills through self-paced curricula, unplugged group activities, and project-based learning. Courses are offered throughout the fall and spring. Check the activities page for availability.

Scratch the surface of computer science through Blockly and Scratch.  Learn how to solve puzzles, animate avatars, create a digital dance party, and more all with the power of programming.

Complete self-paced projects like building a personal website, a responsive blog theme, a Madlibs game, and a digital robot using HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

Learn the basics of app programming and create and customize your first working app.

This fun event brings you together with other young computer programmers to collaborate intensively on software projects.

While Coder Girls is designed for Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors, we do have Coder Girls programs for other age groups:

  • Coder Girls Explorers: An introduction to computer science for Daisies and Brownies.
    * Great course for early readers
    * Learn the basics of algorithms and Blockly
    * Create basic code sequences by solving mazes with Angry Birds
  • Coder Girls Juniors: An introduction to computer science for Brownies and Juniors.
    * Great course for girls who can read and have a little more experience on the computer
    * A mix of unplugged and computer activities
    * Learn the basics of algorithms and Blockly and simplify repetitive steps with loops
    * Solve mazes with Angry Birds and help an artist create a picture
TechBridge Kits

TECHBRIDGE KITS

TechBridge is a fun, hands-on way for girls to explore engineering careers. Engineers do more than build bridges. They create solutions to social problems, they design packaging for new toys, they work with their friends to develop every single thing we use every day. TechBridge kits come with everything you need for STEM fun and no STEM experience is necessary. The easy-to-use Leader Guide and optional YouTube videos will help any leader teach their girls through the activities.

Troops can check out the equipment for a single one-hour activity, or a whole kit for a day of fun. For each full-day program that girls complete, they’ll earn a piece of the TechBridge patch puzzle piece. Complete all five TechBridge box activities and complete your puzzle patch!
