Community-based Programming is a council-wide outreach initiative for girls in at-risk areas who would not normally participate in and benefit from Girl Scouting. We partner with prominent community organizations to deliver alternative methods to teaching Texas State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) standards through our Journeys educational series. GSCTX targets schools where an average of 85% of students are economically disadvantaged, 61% are at risk of dropping out, and 38% are English language learners. Programs are implemented either directly by GSCTX staff or through partnering organizations’ staff and volunteers. Our girls gain access to leadership and service opportunities, which diversify their life experiences, encourage them to make positive life decisions, and support them as they progress toward high school graduation. Community Troops serve over 350 girls annually.
The Community Troops of the Girl Scouts of Central Texas (GSCTX) are designed to reach girls who are unable to participate in traditional troops due to the geographic, socioeconomic, and emotional challenges they face each day.
