Volunteer of the Month

Girl Scouting in Central Texas is made possible through a partnership with nearly 12,000 adult volunteers. From service unit directors to troop leaders, event volunteers to cookie coordinators, Girl Scout volunteers ensure that Central Texas girls are enjoying the best outcomes-based leadership experiences.

Every month GSCTX will recognize one volunteer from each of our 12 areas as a volunteer of the month. We deeply appreciate the work of these volunteers and all volunteers as we make the future brighter for Central Texas girls.

Nominate an outstanding volunteer you know.

September 2009

Kathy Lission, Area 1

Product Sales Coordinator
Concho Pearls SU

Kathy works very hard to coordinate our Product Sales, she gives a lot of her time to ensure that our sales are organized. Kathy is a valuable asset to our Council.

Doreen Shafer, Area 3

Co-Leader
Killeen Sister Cities SU

Mrs. Doreen is our go to gal. She is always there. When we want to go camping she tags along. Cookies sales, she takes on booth sales. Mrs. Doreen helps with registering girl into our troop. She gives her time community service from cleaning up local parks. Washing, walking, or petting the animals at Second Chance Animal Shelter, where she also supervises the future leaders of tomorrow. She gives 110% to Troop 6256. She is helps to plan big events, and small art projects. She has been with our troop for two years now. She is truly a blessing to have in our troop. Doreen has two children a son, daughter, loving husband, and a dog named Peachy. Even though she is a very busy volunteering at her sons school, the FRG (Family Readiness Group,) and church she really does put a lot of time and energy into troop 6256. Troop 6256 is made up of Daisy's, Brownies, Juniors, and Cadets. We are a very large group and Thanks to Mrs. Doreen and many of our volunteers we are able to do so much. We go to many places, and do fun activities. With all the different hats I have asked her to wear she pulls through and gets the job done.

Kellie Codanti, Area 4

Product Sales Manager
Bosque Co. SU

Kelli is positive and helpful. She is a great asset to the Bosque County Service Unit as the Product Sales manager.

Area 5

Marlowe Nunn, Area 6

Assistant Leader
Sunrise SU

Mrs. Nunn has done so much for Troop 875 of Sealy. When our troop leader and I had to take over, Mrs. Nunn didn't hesitant to jump in as my assistant and immediately start working on getting everything straightened out. She has helped me to organize the troop, plan summer activities, and even helped us work out our plans for next year. She has been a BIG help and I think she deserves some recognition beyond what we have given her.

Becky Borgeson, Area 7

Troop Leader #588
Chisholm Trail Service Unit

Ms. Borgeson goes beyond any of her volunteer duties to assist Troop #59. Troop #59 is a new troop and the leaders need lots of assistance to get this program together. Ms. Borgeson brings lots of experience and patience too. Ms. Borgeson does not hesitate to stop what she is doing and assist. She is also a person that listens to problems with out judging, but still finds way to have a positive feedback and never hesitates to drop what she doing to offer assistance. Without this role model, I am not sure that this troop could possibly get off the ground. She makes time for us even though she has own troop to assist with. I truly recommend Ms. Borgeson as the volunteer of the month she is a "Girl Scout Volunteer." She is a wonderful role model for our girls and an outstanding volunteer.

Katie Winfrey, Area 9

Troop leader, service team member
Old Settlers SU

Girl Scout Juniors in our council earned over 670 Bronze Awards this program year. At one point this spring the Bronze Awards were being handed out at a rate of 50 per week. I fell behind in entering this accomplishment into e-Council for the girls. Katie answered my plea for help and entered 450+ girls into e-Council. Thanks, Katie! In addition to helping with input of Bronze Award winners for council, Katie wears many hats on the service unit team. She is our Bronze, Silver and Gold Award consultant, helps with all our major events (chili cook off, Thinking Day, camp, etc.), is one of our new troop consultants, volunteers at recruitment events, and offers her home for service team meetings where we can stay as long as we like and make ourselves at home – as long as we bring chocolate for her. She is one person in the service unit we can always call upon to help with any event. She does not like “titles” so we don’t officially give her one – but she is an integral part of the team and we feel very fortunate to have her.

Sandy Lanzoni, Area 10

SU Treasurer, Co-Leader, Event Registrar
Monarch and Lakeline SUs

Sandy does an unbelievable amount of work keeping the books for Monarch SU and the Girl Scout Concession Stand checkbook. She works hard to keep the troop accounts straight and is constantly calling her banking contacts to get service charges removed and facilitating the smooth resolution of banking/troop money issues. She has two daughters in Girl Scouts and participates and supports both those troops. She handles all the registration when we have events making sure that all the money is accounted for and properly dispersed. She is a constant support to me as Co-SUD and I could not do the job without her. She was my main support system in the planning and implementation of the Monarch/Lakeline/Chrystal Falls/Songbird Leader Daughter Campout. It would not have happened without her help and encouragement. She is also the most courageous of our group. We encountered a very scary feral cat leaping out us at the Texlake Dumpster. When no one else would get out of the truck to throw the lid back so we could "trash the trash," Sandy took a big gulp and said bravely "I'll do it." Hopped out of the truck threw the lid back & scampered back to safety while we all watched in horror and glee. Luckily nothing else jumped out of the dark at us & we were able to dispose of the trash. I cannot say enough good things about Sandy. She is a great Girl Scout and a friend to all.

Laura Obrien, Area 11

Troop Leader
PAW SU

Laura is a wonderful troop leader. She plans and provides activities and events that every girl can do and then she promotes leadership at the Brownie level. The girls and parents always know what to except and can depend on her. Laura is a valuable person in our lives and I know that the other 7 Brownies love her and fearless leadership.

Catherine Covington, Area 12

SUD, Troop Leader
Lake Hills SU

Catherine has done a great job of getting is off to a great start for the school year. We had a planning meeting that was well attended. We also had our first leader meeting that was combined with a meet and greet time (with food) before the meeting. It was the best attended meeting I can remember. Catherine has been our SUD for several years. She continues to do a great job. I can't remember her being recognized for the tremendous amount of effort she puts in. She is also very supportive and quick to respond to questions.
