Girl Scout Service Projects

Girl Scouts are completing service projects by the hundreds! Share your project with us and you might be the next feature on Girl Scouts in Action.

Blankets of Love

In March, Girl Scout Junior Tropp 2094 organized the Cancer Connection Blanket Project as part of their Bronze Award. Their event attracted nearly 100 Girl Scouts to make hand-knotted fleece blankets for people undergoing chemotherapy. In the spirit of service learning, two representatives from the Cancer Connection met with the girls during the event and explained the positive impact of the blankets.

Between Earth & Sky

Girl Scout Daisy Troop 468 is embracing the It's Your Planet - Love It! journey book by making a difference in their community. As they travel through the Between Earth and Sky journey, they have incorporated a tree planting service project. Using their troop profits from the Fall Product Sale, the girls purchased two trees for their school's Butterfly Garden. They hope to purchase milkweed plants with their Cookie Program troop profits to continue beautifying the garden.

Turkeys from Troop 6102

Girl Scout Brownie Troop 6102 shared the season of giving with Meals on Wheels. At every meeting for a month, the girls worked on constructing part of the turkey napkin holders they would donate. Right before Thanksgiving, the girls finished assembly and delivered the festive turkey to Meals on Wheels.

Holiday Cheer

Troops 459 and 1388 from the Lake Hills Service Unit took time from their holiday festivities to spread cheer at Summit Assisted Living Facility. After a little practice, the girls visited the facility to sing songs and deliver Christmas cards. After caroling, the girls spent time chatting with residents and enjoying homemade holiday cookies.

Canned Goodness

To complete two badges and support their school, Girl Scout Junior Troop 1916 from Leander hosted a food drive for two weeks. Working with a supportive teacher, they established a classroom competition and graphed each class’s donations. When it was all said and done, the troop donated 5,250 canned goods to the Hill Country Community Ministries and learned what a positive impact teamwork can make.

A Very Special Birthday

On October 31, Girl Scout Daisy Simmone celebrated her birthday along with our Founder, Juliette Gordon Low. When Simmone was born, her parents received a basket of goodies from a local Girl Scout troop and now that Simmone is a Girl Scout, suggested her troop pay forward the good sentiment. After visiting two hospitals, the girls found an expecting mother whose little girl bundle of joy would be arriving soon. During their visit, the girls learned that the expecting mother, doctor and four nurses had all also been Girl Scouts! The girls loved being with so many Girl Scouts and welcoming a new baby with a very special birthday surprise.

"Fore" the Caldwell House

The First Girl Scouts of Somerwell Service Unit golf tournament, held at Copperas Hollow Country Club in Caldwell, was a great success! Thanks to sponsors and the participants, the service unit raised $1,900. The money will go to making foundation repairs for the Caldwell Girl Scout House.

Sharing the Stars

While working on the Wave the Flag Try-It, Girl Scout Brownie Troop 5058 learned about soldiers and veterans who receive the stars of retired flags. The soldiers and veterans had been very touched by this gesture and inspire the girls to lead a project to collect more stars. Troop 5058 gathered, retired and collected the stars from 8 US flags and 4 Texas flags. The girls will distribute the stars to solidiers as part of their 9/11 remembrance activities.

In December 2009 a GSCTX board member received a thank you email from active soldiers who received the stars. Their gratitude is proof that anyone, even a child, can make a signiciant, positive impact on another person.

Don't Mess with Texas...or Girl Scouts

Girl Scout Junior Troop 2301 recently spent a weekend in Port Aransas, Texas. Before enjoying the water, the girls  picked up trash along two miles of the beach, which equaled a pickup truck bed of trash. The girls were amazed at other people's carelessness and promised never to litter or let their friends litter. Also, while in Port Aransas they met a 1000+ year old tree and climbed or swung from the branches of her offspring.

Girl Scouts Recycle at Expo

A group of 24 girls and 11 adults from areas 9 and 10 attended the Round Rock Green Expo. They helped expo staff with the recycling bins, making sure the material got into the right bins. Their efforts helped to keep 40% of the materials out of the landfill! Great job girls!

Women's Storybook Project

Girl Scout Troop 1500 led a council-wide book drive for the Women's Storybook Project, a program that allows incarcerated women to connect with their children through books. The women record readings of the books which are then shared with their children. During the book drive more than 150 books were collected to help these mothers and children reconnect. Fancy Nancy with Pets

Girl Scouts who attended the Fancy Nancy Pet Party not only had fun being fancy but gave back to the community by helping animals at the Second Chance Animal Shelter. The girls collected goods, such as food, to support the animals waiting for adoption.

Gorgeous in Giddings

Girl Scouts in Giddings beautified their Girl Scout house by painting a mural. The mural shows beautiful nature scenes that are warm and inviting. The girls even left a blank section for the house sign which had been blown down by Hurricane Ike.

Blankets for Cancer Connection

Girl Scout Daisy Troop 1390 helped the Old Settlers Service Unit create 50 blankets for Cancer Connections. Cancer Connections delivered the blankets to cancer patients in Hays, Travis and Williamson counties during the Christmas holidays. While creating the blankets the girls discussed how the blankets would keep a person fighting cancer warm during their treatments and during the cold winter.

Getting Green at School

Troops 459 and 956 volunteered to water their elementary school's newly planted trees. The trees were planted to beautify the campus and eventually, to provide shade. However since the school lacks a watering system, ensuring that the trees receive proper watering is a labor of love. The Girl Scout troops will continue watering the plants after school, helping make their community a greener place.
